Biography / Background

Nguyen Tuong Huy has been a lecturer/researcher at the Faculty of Geography, Hanoi National University of Education (HNUE), Vietnam since 1996. He is currently the Head of the Department of Social and Economic Geography, and the Vice-Director of the Institute of Social Sciences (ISS) under HNUE. Mr Huy completed his first MA in Social and Economic Geography at HNUE, his second MA in Rural Development Management (International Program) at Khon Kean University, Thailand, and was awarded his PhD in Human Geography from the University of Sydney, Australia.

Mr Huy's research interests cover the fields of human geography and development studies. Specific interests include agrarian/aquarian transition and associated issues of livelihood change and social differentiation, inequality and poverty, natural resources management and sustainable development. He also concerns about cultural geography, global geopolitics and international relations, research and teaching methodology in human geography. His recent research projects are about transformation of coastal fisheries in Vietnam with a focus on livelihood changes and their implications; sponsored by Vietnamese Government and supported by the Challenges of the Agrarian Transition in Southeast Asia Project (funded by Canada's Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council); regional development, coastal resource management and poverty reduction in Vietnam funded by Norwegian Agency for Development and Cooperation (NORAD).

Mr Huy has been actively involved in teaching and training teachers of Geography, supervising research students doing their theses. Courses he has taught include Introduction to Human Geography, Social and Economic Geography of Vietnam, World Regional Geography, Social and Economic Geography of the World, Geography of the East Sea (for undergraduate level); Research Methodology in Social and Economic Geography; Social Issues of Population Geography and Demography; Emerging Issues of the World and Vietnam’s Social and Economic Geography (for postgraduate level). He is also responsible for developing, reviewing and evaluating curricula, textbooks and course materials; for conducting and coordinating educational research and training activities.
